Taiwan government's promotion of energy transition has yielded fruitful results. The installed capacity of renewable energy has risen significantly by 7 times from 1.9 GW in 2016 to 13.9 GW in August 2023. Renewable energy power generation has also increased from approximately 12.7 billion kWh in 2016 to an estimated 27.5 billion kWh this year, accounting for approximately 10% of the total power generation; Taipower's air pollution emissions will also drop from 107 thousand tons in 2016 to 42 thousand tons, a decrease of 61%.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) reported the "Energy Transition Achievements" at the Executive Yuan on 26 October 2023. During the conference, Chen Chien-jen, Premier of Executive Yuan, acknowledging the current achievements of different aspects of energy transition promotions and thanked all ministries for their full cooperation.

The MOEA stated that, apart from continually adjusting power generation structure and replacing old units, the government will also strengthen measures to reduce air pollution and enhance energy efficiency to gradually achieve the vision of sustainability in Taiwan.

The MOEA pointed out that energy transition is not easy. Many difficulties had to be overcome behind the success of wind and solar energy development, such as solar PV issues on lands, feeders, and procedures. These bottlenecks were resolved by introducing diverse approaches, including utilization of unfavorable agricultural areas and aquavoltaics. Taiwan's offshore wind power started from the beginning, and has overcome the bottleneck through diversified measures to gain a leading position among Asia-Pacific countries. Taiwan will show more proactivity in the development of advanced energy, including geothermal energy, ocean energy, biomass energy, and hydrogen energy, and use renewable energy as the main driving force of its energy transition and net zero transition.

To achieve power supply stability and net zero emissions, the MOEA has set up renewable energy targets for energy transition, and will maximize the development of wind and solar power sites, offshore wind power, and advanced energy, and launch related measures to various types of energy storage, enhance grid resilience, and accelerate energy transition. The MOEA emphasized that the promotion of energy transition requires the joint efforts and cooperation between the public and private sectors. The MOEA will also adopt a more pragmatic and proactive attitude to gradually achieve energy transition.
